Osmosis is the process by which solvent molecules (usually water) move through a semi-permeable membrane from a low concentration solution of solutes to a high concentration solution of soluts. This process tends to balance solute concentrations on both sides of the membrane. The water is released gradually and continuously, until the container contains water and the roots in the surrounding soil need it.

- Water Absorption – When the ceramic container is filled with water, it is absorbed into the pores of the ceramic material releasing it directly to the ground
