Castanets are a percussion instrument (idiophone), used in Kalo, blackberry, ottoman, ancient Roman, Italian, Spanish, Sephardic, Switzerland and Portuguese music. The besteht instrument of a pair of concave shells joined on one edge of a chain. They are held in hand and used to produce clicks for rhythmic accents or a tear or rattle consisting of a quick series of clicks. They are traditionally made of wood (chestnut; Spanish: Chestnut), although fibreglass is becoming increasingly popular.
