Xuan paper, aka “Rice paper”, one of the traditional Chinese paper-making processes, is a traditional Chinese paper used for classical calligraphy and painting. THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN RAW & RIPE XUAN PAPER!! Raw xuan paper has strong water absorption and permeability, making it easy to produce a rich variation of ink rhyme. It is often used in landscape painting. It is not easy to master the ink painting, as the ink and water seep in quickly. Ripe xuan paper is lack of blotting, making it suitable for use in brush painting, as it can withstand layers of chalking, and the ink & color will not spread out. Not recommend for ink and wash painting, as it can become “alum-bleached” or brittle after a long time.
