Totally tongue-in-cheek, Bad Boys pits two brothers against the world with an arsenal of wisecracks and women-talk. The humour and tone is summed up succinctly by the “nah-nah-nah-nah” of “I’ve Got A Little Something For You” (MN8). Joined for the ride by Diana King, Warren G, KMFDM, 2PAC and plenty more phonetically challenging one-hit wonders, this collection of Rhythmic American Poetry is a perfect snapshot of the mid-90s development of African-Americans’ profile in film. It is of course one of those soundtracks that represents songs which appeared for only a few seconds here and there. As such the full-lengths cut time available for Mark Mancina’s genre defining score. His four-minute theme can’t fail to impress with its savvy interpolation of street rhythm into an irritatingly catchy “hero” motif. Coupled with his score for Speed, this is the theme that launched his career. Overall, here’s an album that makes for an ideal workout for your car stereo. –Paul Tonks
