The Junkers Ju 88 was in service with the Luftwaffe from 1936 to 1945. With over 15, 000 planes seeing service with the Luftwaffe in a multitude of roles; Schnellbomber (fast bomber), dive bomber, Torpedo bomber, night and heavy fighters, ground attack and reconnaissance aircraft, this was the most common Luftwaffe aircraft other than the Messerschmitt Bf 109. This scene depicts the legendary Leonard Cheshire VC (1917-1992) experience for the first time being on the receiving end of a bombing raid during the attack on RAF Driffield (a bomber command base that was the home of 102 and 77 Squadron) on 15th August 1940 during the Battle Of Britain by fifty Ju 88s of KG30 (Kampfgeschwader 30) battle wing. Although the air base had previously been targeted by single aircraft it had not been subjected to a multi aircraft attack until this raid. The base was subjected to 171 direct hits with 14 deaths, plus numerous wounded and the complete destruction of 12 Whitley Bombers.
