The Komodo dragon is the largest currently living lizard and belongs to the family of monitor lizards. The prey of these diurnal animals changes with age and increasing body size, ranging from insects through to mammals such as deer and wild boars. Komodos are able to hunt larger mammals thanks to glands in the lower jaw which produce a poison that, among other things, reduces blood clotting and causes shock. Young Komodo dragons are excellent climbers and spend their time almost exclusively in trees, the main reasons being easy foraging, good hiding, spots in the sun, and protection against cannibalistic older Komodos. Larger Komodo dragons have no natural predators, but juveniles are hunted not only by their older counterparts, but also by wild dogs, civet cats, wild pigs, birds of prey, and snakes. Adult Komodo dragons live entirely on the ground, as their body size and mass no longer allows them to climb.
not appropriate for children under the age of 3
