1 x CD AlbumUK 2002
According to the Guinness Book of Records, Paul Oakenfold is the world’s most successful DJ and few would argue–he is, after all, the man who almost single-handedly invented the concept of the superstar DJ. Despite this, and his producing bands such as the Happy Mondays and U2, Bunkka is his first real stab at solo superstardom. While it occasionally pushes the right buttons, it’s far too blunt and schizophrenic to appeal to his traditional fan base. Abandoning the podium trance with which he made his name, Bunkka sees Oakenfold marrying Hybrid-like breakbeats with rock, hip-hop and progressive house–not to mention a healthy dose of pop. Add an impressive list of guest vocalists–Tricky, Nelly Furtado, Ice Cube, Perry Farrell, Hunter S Thompson–and a slew of radio-friendly tunes, and it soon becomes clear that Oakey has gone straight for the populist jugular. Fair enough, you might say, but no amount of star turns, catchy choruses and occasional flashes of brilliance can hide the fact that Bunkka is fundamentally a very patchy album. –Matt Anniss
