Oils for modern engines will have to comply with the latest API ratings of SN/CF and specific ACEA and OEM specifications which link with fuel efficiency, drain intervals and aftermarket exhaust treatment systems. A classic car however, have opposite characteristics and tend to have cork/graphite/rope seals, gear driven oil pumps with lower pressure, larger oil galleries which have a greater dependency on “cling” & “splash” lubrication. Such a different engine design can demand a different lubrication method, of which Castrol Classic Oils offer formulations for this with older vehicles in mind. Inadequate detergent can result in gums and lacquers sticking to engine components with a higher operating temperature which can lead to the blocking of oil galleries – But, too much detergent can cause an increased amount of metallic ash forming within the combustion chambers and piston crowns which can cause detonation and pinking in older engines. In older engines where an increased build up of carbon has formed detergents can have a scouring effect, causing the carbon to flake off and the debris blocking up oil galleries and spray jets. High levels of detergent can also “wash” carbon from seals revealing oil leaks where the carbon may have prevented these from being seen. Not enough anti-oxidant can cause the oil to thicken quickly during high temperature motoring, with cause large build ups of carbon, gum and varnish to clogg oil galleries, filters and piston rings. Anti-wear additives are also added to ensure that if the oil film between moving parts should break down, metal on metal contact and irreparable damage is prevented.
