The Thatheras follow a common hereditary occupation, that of processing metal and crafting utensils using brass, copper and ‘kansa’, an alloy of copper, tin and zinc. In Rajasthan, the Thathera community is mainly found in Jodhpur, Alwar,Jaiselmer, Jaipur, Ajmer, Bikaner, Udaipur, and Ujjain. Using basic handmade tools, the craftspeople create ritualistic and utilitarian copper vessels. First, the cooled metal cakes are flattened into thin plates, and then hammered into shapes such as pots, urns, and plates. The temperature is carefully controlled while heating the plates during hammering and shaping. This is done by using tiny wood-fired stoves buried in the earth and through the aid of handheld bellows designs are carved by hammering tiny dents on the surface of the heated metal. Finally, the utensils are manually shed. Copper platters are lastly hand painted by artisans from various painting schools such as Gond and Mithila.
