Vegeta is a complex character who has changed greatly throughout the Dragon Ball manga and anime series. Initially an arrogant and bitter villain who believes himself superior due to his Saiyan race and royal station, over the course of the series he grows and changes to become truly heroic and appreciate the value of friends and family. His longest relationship through the series is with Goku with whom he has a fierce rivalry that spurs him to train ever harder in order to surpass him. Eventually Vegeta finds something to protect in the family he creates with Bulma which allows him to show his heroism as he fights to protect them and the rest of the world.
