During the 17th century a series of blacksmiths were founded in Finland. The vast expanses of the Pohja region, together with its wasteful hydraulic power and excellent water routes, made it the perfect hub for the Finnish iron industry. In 1630 the Antskog smiths were founded, followed in 1641 by those of Billnäs. Fiskars began its journey in 1649 and today is one of the oldest companies in the Western world.
