Product Description
After landing in Normandy in June 1944, the Allies planned the invasion of German territory to end the war as quickly as possible. Operation Market Garden, planned by Bernard Montgomery, planned to bypass German defense by deploying British, American and Polish airborne forces. Paratroopers should take control of the bridges in the Netherlands between Eindhoven and Arnhem to ensure the safety of the connecting routes for the entry of Allied forces into Germany. However, the strong German resistance and the failure of the allies to cross the Rhine thwarted the operation which proved to be a failure. The war lasted and it took months of additional fighting before the Allies invaded Germany. Hartenstein served as the pivot of operations during Operation Market Garden and served as the headquarters of the 1st British Air Division.
