Millford is the newest watercolour paper developed by St Cuthberts Mill. It is styled on the discontinued Whatman watercolour paper, after artists grieved the loss of this unique type of watercolour paper. It is mould made from 100% cotton (just like the original Whatman), and its superb surface is created using natural woollen felts. It is deliberately created to have a high resistance to water, so it’s washes perform very differently to traditional watercolour papers. Millford sees the welcome return of a much loved style of watercolour paper. Millford Watercolour Paper General Storage and Handling Instructions Keep the paper in its original packaging until required. Store the paper flat. Avoid extremes of temperature or humidity. Do not store in direct sunlight. Handle the paper by the edges or underside. Avoid touching the area to be painted, as oils from the skin could affect the wash. Painting Lighter weight papers (300g/m² and lighter) may benefit from soaking and stretching to avoid the paper cockling (buckling) when applying washes. Avoid exposing the paper to detergents, as these can affect the paper’s absorbency. The paper’s surface is most vulnerable when wet, and should be handled with care. Be gentle with the paper. Do not scrub it, or use masking fluid. The paper is very hard sized, so using pen & ink isn’t recommended. Fade Resistance and Framing Frame finished paintings with acid free materials to preserve the paper’s archival qualities. As with all original artworks, paintings should be framed behind glass and hung away from direct sunlight.
