Treats provide an important mechanism for strengthening the bond between a pet and owner and are frequently used as a motivating tool for training. In addition, some treats have positive effects in areas such as oral health and joint health. The energy consumption from treats contributes to a pet’s daily energy intake and therefore must be accounted for within the daily calorie intake. In addition, many snacks and treats do not deliver all the essential nutrients a pet requires. Therefore it is important that the energy intake from snacks and treats does not exceed 10% of daily energy requirements. Feeding in excess of this amount may result in nutritional deficiencies.
