Canteen latches can be found on pedestals of double wing doors to lock them at the top and bottom. They are embedded in the door/window edge so that they can only be viewed and operated when the element is open. The lower edge latch releases a latch shoe when locking, which then pushes into an opening of the corresponding bottom strike plate. The upper edge bolt moves its latch shoe into a strike plate which is inserted into the door frame at the top.
