Stevie Ray Vaughan was born in Dallas Texas on October 3rd 1954 and died tragically in a helicopter crash on August 27th 1990. He was aged only 35, and was at the height of his critical and commercial success, at the time of his death.
SRV began playing guitar at only seven years of age and he was inspired to pick up the instrument by his older brother Jimmie, who would himself find fame with his band The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Once the young Stevie decided to ditch High School in 1971 to pursue a career as a Blues artist, his place in the exclusive world of Guitar Heroes was pretty much assured. In 1977 Vaughan would form the band that would be his backing band for the rest of his life and career. That band was Double Trouble and, along with Vaughan, the line up was Chris ‘Whipper’ Layton on drums and Tommy Shannon on bass.
His favourite guitar, and the one that he was known for using more than any other, was the one that he nicknamed ‘Lenny’. Also known as the ‘SRV guitar, ‘Lenny’ was named after Vaughan’s wife Leonora because, as he explained, he considered the instrument to be his ‘first wife’. Lenny was a 1963 guitar body married to a 1962 guitar neck and fitted with a set of 1959 pickups and was a unique and distinctive sounding instrument, especially in the hands of Mr Vaughan.
The guitar started out life as a Sunburst finish model, but years of rough treatment at the hands of SRV eventually wore the paintwork down to the bare alder body. For some reason he fitted a left handed guitar vibrato bridge to the guitar instead of the standard right handed one. Perhaps this was a nod to his old guitar hero Jimi Hendrix ?
In 2004, fourteen years after his death, SRV’s beloved ‘Lenny’ was auctioned in aid of Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Foundation and raised a staggering $623,500 for charity.
