Swordfish’s OmniPoint Mechanical Sharpener is a big, versatile sharpener at a budget price. Standing about 10cm tall – and almost as much side to side and front to back – this is a high capacity sharpener and currently the largest in the Swordfish range. The shavings tray can hold shavings from an estimated 35 brand new (square-ended) pencils! Its other features include a variable pencil entry that allows it to tackle pencils of any diameter from standard 8mm up to 12mm jumbo pencils. It also has a pencil point selector – you can set the sharpener to produce a sharp point, a blunt point – or anything in between. That’s essential when a sharp point is required for detail and a blunt point for shading. These features give the OmniPoint greater versatility. Of course, even the long-lasting helical blade in a Swordfish sharpener will eventually become dull. That isn’t a problem because replacing the blade only takes a few moments. Remove one screw – withdraw the old blade assembly – insert the replacement – replace the screw. That’s all there is to it. Unlike some sharpeners, the OmniPoint produces good points on all types of pencil, even notoriously hard-to-sharpen pastel and charcoal pencils. Kids will love that it has a desk clamp to hold it steady – all they have to do is to turn the handle and they’ll have an ideal point on their crayons.
