An extremely unusual Main Battle Tank designed following an investigation into hits and injuries on tanks revealed that most hits occur above the 1m height. This lead to a design which dispensed with the turret and mounted the 105mm gun in the chassis. Like German tank destroyers of WWII, the whole vehicle has to be moved to traverse the gun. In effect it reduces the offensive capability of the vehicle but enhances the defensive. However in a hull down position the tank becomes virtually invisible. The Strv 103B was introduced in the 1960s and was more accurate than the M60A1E3. The 103B was replaced by the more powerful Strv 103C in 1984.
