Born Lars Johan Yngve Lannerback on June 30th 1963, Yngwie J. Malmsteen was definitely an early starter on the road to Rock, starting his first band, Track On Earth at the age of 10. When he was 12 he took his mother’s maiden name, Malmsten, changed the spelling to Malmsteen and adopted it as his own surname.
As a teenager Malmsteen was heavily influenced by Classical music, in particular the Italian composer and virtuoso violionist Niccolo Paginini. It was during his teens that he was to discover the guitarist who would become his biggest influence. That guitarist was Ritchie Blackmore and the young Malmsteen would study Blackmore’s playing techniques and absorb a lot of his style into his own playing.
