Deficiency meant that Soviet formations were sparse when it comes to transport and hatchelon support. Pioneer solvements were a remarkable exception. Their expertise was essential for bridge construction, demolition work, reinforcement construction and placement and clearance of minfields. These all the necessary skills that the humble masses didn’t have. Assault Engineers were assigned specialists to liquefy hostile highpoints during a step and clear obstacles to let tank units break through. This was extremely dangerous work with a high casualty rate (even according to Red Army standards) and Assault Engineer units have sometimes been equipped with SN-42 body armour to give them a chance of battle.
