The Greenman is a curious mythological symbol which appears throughout Europe, especially in the British Isles. Consisting of a face made entirely of leave or of a face surounded by leaves and ‘disgorging’ (or spewing out) fronds of foliage from his mouth he is thought to be the embodiment of the eternal Life Force, of Life Renewed and of growth coming once again from death. The Greenman is found most commonly throughout churches and cathedrals – high on the capitals atop columns, in the roof bosses between the vaulting, on the misericords of choir stalls. If you were to look, it would not take you long to find him. So popular a figure was he in our culture that eventually he escaped from his ecclesiastical origins – search for him among wrought iron gates and the architecture of Victorian Theatre and Town Hall: he is often there to be found. But the fact that he is so often found in churches is a curious thing. What is a pagan image doing in a Christian church – is it merely to entertain the illiterate peasant during the Latin mass? Or could it be that the Greenman is the very embodiment of Rebirth: of the Resurrection, Hope and Life – an icon which the common man would have well understood long ago. It is a curious fact that he is a figure who still resonates so well with us today.
