In 1965, the first Mustang GT was introduced. It featured two new variants of the 289-cubic-inch V8 engine: one with 225 horsepower and the other with 271 horsepower, which could be combined with either three- or four-speed manual gearboxes or an automatic called the Cruise-O-Matic. The 1965 Mustang GT was available in all three body styles (convertible, coupe and fastback) and included a new dashboard that would later become standard across the range in 1966. On the outside, it was distinguished by stripes on the sides of the body, fog lights, twin exhausts and plates with the inscription “GT” on the front wings.
