The boys from the Boxed label, purveyors the Global Underground series, probably the best DJ mix CDs around, have come up with yet another release and–surprise!–it’s yet another non-stop double CD dance music monster. Protype 2’s DJ and track selector is Seb Fontaine. A while back, Mr Fontaine might have been best known for his trancey cheesings down at London’s impossibly leopard-skin-print, glam, Malibu Stacey night, but he’s a man who’s recently very much changed his musical spots. He’s seen the future and he’s put it right here. Seb’s new sound is hard: tough electronic beats from the pumped up end of tech house, trance stripped of all its Top Of The Pops fluffiness until it’s a sleek, mean groove, banging hard-house hooverisms de-cheesified and welded to the funk. It’s thrilling, it’s raw and, in an era where every other DJ seems to have a column in a tabloid newspaper, it sounds genuinely, excitingly underground. Guaranteed to go down a storm. –Robert Heller
