The Audi Quattro is the high-end version of the Audi GT Coupe which in turn was the sport variant of the Audi 80 B2, this version is a sports car produced by the German manufacturer Audi between 1980 and 1991. It was the first car to use four-wheel drive after the 1966 Jensen FF and one of the most successful rally cars in history. Since 1981, the golden age of Group 4, the Audi Quattro, the standard bearer of the four-wheel drive concept, had not stopped winning the World Rally Championship. With the arrival of Group B, the Audi Quattro in its A1 and A2 evolutions remained very competitive until the entry into the scene of more modern rivals like the Peugeot 205 T16 or the Lancia Delta S4. In addition, the constant increase in power and the terrible distribution of weight made the Quattro an unsafe and unreliable car, especially because of its tendency to understeer. In 1984 the Audi Sport Quattro debuted in the Rally of Corsica, a new vehicle developed from the old Audi Quattro A2. The biggest challenge for Audi’s technicians was to resolve the poor weight distribution of the obsolete Quattro, as 60% of the vehicle’s weight fell on the front axle, making it a dangerous understeer. To solve this, the engineers moved the water and oil radiators, batteries and alternator to the rear of the vehicle. In this way the weight distribution was almost perfect 51/49, and space was freed up under the saturated bonnet. To further improve the car’s manoeuvrability, the wheelbase was shortened by 320 mm, which together with the mass concentration at the ends made it a delicate car for driving in fast areas.
