Colt’s Manufacturing Company (CMC) is an American firearm manufacturer. It was founded in 1836 by Samuel Colt. Colt is mainly known for the development, manufacture and marketing firearms in the second half of the 19th and 20th century. Colt’s early designs played an important role in the popularisation of the revolver and changing the previous single-track pistols. Among the most famous Colt products include the Colt Walker, the Colt Single Action Army or Peacemaker and the Colt Python. John Browning worked for Colt for a time and was initially responsible for developing a semi-automatic gun that came on the market when Colt M1900 and eventually evolved into the Colt M1911 gun. Although not developed by Colt, Colt was the main responsibility for the production of all AR 15 and M16 rifles as well as many derivatives of these weapons. The most successful and well-known are the numerous rifles of the M16 family, including the CAR-15 and the M4 carabiner. In 2002, Colt Defense was distributed from the Colt’s Manufacturing Company. The Colt Manufacturing Company now supplies the civilian market, while Colt Defense serves the military and private security markets worldwide in law enforcement.
