The battle in Normandy, which lasted from June to August 1944, marked the liberation of Western Europe from German rule by the Alllies. The battle called Operation Overlord began on June 6, 1944, also known as D-Day, when around 156,000 American, British and Canadian soldiers landed on five beaches along a 50-mile heavily fortified coastal strip in the French region of Normandy. The invasion was one of the greatest amphibious military attacks in history and required extensive planning.
