The light unit clicks in and out of the base of the cup and once removed the cup can be washed by hand or popped in a dishwasher. The nightlight is light sensitive and will only come on in the dark so the battery will hopefully not be worn down by inquisitive little fingers during playtime, but it can also be manually turned off if required.
