These posts have a thin spike at the top so that coloured croquet clips can be attached to the post to indicate which balls have the post as their next target.
Depending upon whether you are playing a game with 4, 6 or 8 balls, the winning post can have 4, 6 or 8 colour bands. However, the number of bands is a cosmetic feature only and so in fact to save money, an 8 player game could be played with a 4 banded post and it would not be any problem.
